An Opportunity to Meet and Share With Future Educators and School Administrators

Recently, Marc and I guest lectured at New York University. Our father, Jay Gottlieb, is a Professor of Educational Psychology with a specialization in Special Education and teaches both graduate and undergraduate courses at NYU. We presented on the state of special education law in New York to his class of future teachers and school administrators.

Our goal was to provide a summary of special education law, including a specific discussion the foundational cases and ideas about inclusion of special education children in general educational classrooms.

In addition, we felt it was important to share our experience with some common errors the DOE makes and how parents can address them through the legal system. We did so with the hope that those future teachers won’t make the same mistakes, and that their future students will get the services and placements that they need.

Most importantly, we wanted to provide the future teachers with an understanding of the rights of special education students as well as the responsibilities of the school system.

Marc and I feel it is important to provide this information to future educators. Typically, we work with families when the proper supports are not provided to their children. Meeting with future educators allowed us to share an important message and provide an alternative viewpoint. Special education students are more likely to be provided with what they are entitled to if there is a clear understanding of what school districts are legally responsible to provide.
