Broken Box Mime Theater

This week I would like to give a bump to David Jenkins, a friend of mine who has been involved in a theater called Broken Box Mime Theater. They are a very talented and successful mime troupe that focus on nonverbal storytelling for non-speaking kids, through physical performance gestures and expression.

The theater has recently branched out into providing educational workshops that have been employed in public special education settings — and I think would be incredibly beneficial in the private school milieu.

By taking language out of the equation, Broken Box Mime Theater gives children with language delays and communication issues an opportunity to really focus on the potential and significance of nonverbal communication and expression — in a fun, multisensory environment.

The workshops help develop:

  • Peer relationships;

  • Social-emotional skills;

  • Self-understanding; and

  • Resilience.

It's long past the time to bring the benefits of theater education to children who may have receptive and expressive language delays, and to provide children with special needs with an outlet for expressive live-action and collaborative storytelling.

I think the work they do is fantastic, innovative, and incredibly valuable, but please — take a look and let me know your thoughts!
