The Shefa School: A Leader

Any parents of children with language-based learning disabilities, or reading disabilities, whether Jewish or not, will likely have heard of The Shefa School.

The Shefa School has been providing exemplary language-centered, multisensory special education instruction for children with language-based learning disabilities for the better part of a decade now.

Shefa is a Jewish religious school. In addition to providing top-notch special education, it provides religious instruction, including an opportunity for morning prayer.

As is so often the case in New York City, Jews — the quintessential New York diasporic community — often seem to be early adopters when it comes to putting their own spin on public services.

I would be very curious to know if any of our readers would be interested or have any thoughts on the possibility of special education schools for other cultural/religious/ethnic groups in the New York Metro area — like a school that provides special educational instruction and opportunities for children in a religious — or even cultural — milieu.  I could certainly be missing something, but I see no reason that we shouldn’t have special education schools that cater to the Chinese or Muslim community.

There are so many diaspora communities in New York, that places like The Shefa School could thrive all over the city. If this is something that you've ever considered or wondered about, get in touch!
