Open Letter to Mayor Adams
As Mayor Adams forges full steam ahead with his cuts to the Department of Education (DOE), some faith-based organizations have joined parents attorneys in voicing their concerns. There is currently an open, Interfaith letter being circulated for signatures that articulates what many have been thinking.
The letter lays out its case eloquently:
“First and foremost, public schools have always been underfunded, a disinvestment that has impacted Black and Brown students in particular, a fact we have seen as leaders in our communities. We have seen it in our religious communities as parents and guardians struggle to support their children with school supplies; as families seek to find adequate behavioral, mental health, and language services; and as hospital chaplains who have met these same students in intensive care units following suicide attempts because of the lack of care and resources given to our young people.”
The letter also points out the incongruities of Mayor Adams’ past statements, in which he implored parents to pray for a restoration of the cuts he has always had the power to reverse. They assert that the mayor is engaging in “spiritual bypassing” — using spiritual rhetoric to avoid responsibilities.
Please encourage your faith leaders to become signatories here.
