It’s a Scary Process. Start here.

Parents seek our firm’s help during various stages of the education and tuition reimbursement process. Some have experience; others are just learning the ropes. By way of referrals and internet searches, we are often the first stop for families who are figuring out how to navigate the complex special education and tuition reimbursement system.

For those families who are on the first stop of this journey, the initial task is to discern whether their child has a learning disability. Parents may suspect that their child has a disability, but are still uncertain. Our recommendation is to obtain a neuropsychological evaluation conducted by a psychologist or pediatric neurologist. This results in a summary, and often a diagnosis, that will help determine the best approach to addressing the child’s learning needs.

Ultimately, the parents are driving the ship. As lawyers, we are tools for parents to use to achieve their goals — which vary greatly depending on the child. As such, each strategy requires a different approach, which must be intentional and targeted in order to be effective.

We want our parents to have an idea of what they want for their child. It could be anything along the special education continuum, including:

  • Increased classroom support

  • School-based services

  • Outside tutoring or therapy

  • Executive function coaching

  • Advocacy

  • Tuition reimbursement for private school placement

  • Some or all of the above

At the start of our work with a family, it is best to come in prepared to attack specific goals. If parents need more information prior in order to formulate the goals, we will help them with the next steps.
